Indian Wells – Night Drops (2012)

Indian Wells Night Drops coverThis is Indian Wells, an Italian act self-described as “Tennistronic.” On Facebook, its group members are listed as John McEnroe, Bjorn Borg and others who’ve made their mark on the sport. Perhaps he’s named for the Indian Wells Tennis Garden in Indian Wells, Calif. That would make sense, right? Tennis is this music’s life blood, however odd it may seem. It’s only fitting, then, that “Wimbledon 1980” is the second single (following “Deuce”) from Wells’ debut album Night Drops, out in June on Bad Panda.

The track opens with the sounds of tennis balls being hit, a percussion then mixed with light atmospherics and actual courtside commentary. The meat of the song feels like a bizarre brush of noise that’s created while you try to separate one sound from another. The music culminates in a dark wave of released tension, though it’s not exactly clear how we got there.

“Wimbledon” reflects such a specific moment in time, its focus is more ‘mood’ than ‘music,’ and that’s a ballsy move regardless of your advantage. Experience the song for yourself below…prefixmag
