Echoboy – Giraffe (2003)

This album is intriguing and intelligent. It moves from order to chaos and back again, often in the same track. My favorite track is the slightly New Order-ish “Don’t Destroy Me”, which is a trancey, throbbing meditation on … death (at least that’s my interpretation). Other highlights are “Comfort of the Hum” and “Good on TV”. The lyrics in the album are deep and meaningful without coming across as pretentious. The music is top-notch. I look forward to hearing more from Echoboy in the future. Douglas King

Fred Avril – That Horse Must Be Starving (2003)

Does Fred Avril’s debut, THAT HORSE MUST BE STARVING, signal a new direction for one of the most consistent electronic labels in the world, F-Communications? The album approaches IDM with a French twist, a heretofore unexplored area in the F-Communications catalog. But, really, the attention to songcraft aligns it more with A Reminiscent Drive than Squarepusher. “Velvet Blues,” despite the clattering noise, is still at heart all about the sad strings. “The Date” channels Serge Gainsbourg with a sequencer and a penchant for distortion — pop experimentalism, I love it (it pops up again on “Like Everybody Else”). “Eye World” is a love song filtered through an IDM prism. The remake of Li’l Louis classic “French Kiss” comes off a little bit contrived, despite its beautiful beginning. The thumping beat of “Big Wheel II,” however, gives it an interesting texture when compared to the twisting sounds of the songs the precede (“Double Mind”) and follow it (“Global Headphones”)… Discogs

Mitoma – Interstellar Debris (2011)

An excellent journey of sonic proportions. Razor sharp rhythms pulse frenetically over an open spaced and futuristic backdrop. There are moments that hint of rust and mechanical decay, as beautiful tones dance and weave behind writhing chemical reactions which would make a befitting soundtrack to the birth of the universe. Put simply, a stunning and moving piece of sound art. J.Straw
