Neosignal – Planet Online (2013)

Neosignal planet online cover

Neosignal is an electronic music band originated in Hamburg / Germany at the tail end of 2011. after years of solo productions Florian Harres (also known as Phace) and Michael Bräuninger (also known as Misanthrop) decided to unite their musical vision in neosignal to reach out into new angles of electronic music and to fulfill their own perception of combining human soul and digital technology in sound and vision. Having released their first pieces of music in form of a remix of Noisia’s ‘Stigma’ on Deadmau5’s Mau5trap, a remix of Rockwell & Kito’s ‘Childhood Memories’ on Shogun Audio and a remix of Koan Sound’s ‘Eastern Thug’ on Skrillex’s OWSLA imprint, the duo fully dedicated 2012 to the production of their debut LP. While showcasing their LP the very first time at Europes biggest independant music festival Eurosonic in Groningen/Holland in January 2013, Noisia instantly signed the LP to their Division Recordings imprint. Their music already receives support by international media such as BBC / Radio 1 and Mixmag, and with fans like Amon Tobin, Skrillex and Noisia, you expect neosignal to offer something different – and the German duo certainly don’t disappoint. One can say that Florian and Michael developed an own sound best described as a mixture of hard-edged electronic music with a touch of rock and funk beneath the German engineering. Their music is just about as far from the world of bottle- popping, deodorant-selling dance music as is possible…bio

Neosignal ‎– Raum Und Zeit (2013)

Neosignal ‎– Raum Und Zeit cover

Drum N Bass legends, Phace and Misanthrop, are the duo behind Neosignal. On Raum Und Zeit the duo have crafted one of this years standout albums. Raum Und Zeit translates to “Space and Time” and a fitting name due to the albums futuristic sound. Everything on this album sounds like nothing I’ve ever heard before. Every second feels perfectly crafted and each song offers something new to the experience. While listening to Raum Und Zeit, I lost sense of time, each track is a sonic journey. When listening to albums I can usually name favorite tracks, that is not the case here. There is something to love about each track and all of them stand on their own. The sound design is gorgeous and it feels futuristic. Even the song progressions are unique. On the track Saturn City, the tempo is constantly changing and the main melody evolves as the song progresses. It’s little details like those that makeRaum Und Zeit standout. If you want something new and forward thinking, then look no further! Raum Und Zeit will draw you in, this is an album that can’t be missed, stream below and purchase…salacioussound

Sneaker Pimps – Splinter (1999)

Sneaker Pimps - Splinter (2001) cover

Its presence ghosts off this record like chill off the sea. The more you listen, the more obvious it gets; the more appropriate it seems. Twelve songs about different levels of letdown – alienation and betrayal; shortfall and disgust, “high fives and corporate anthems” – but always, always possessing an ability to be lifted above it; to float in a strange and tragic euphoria in which pain and torment are overwhelmed. A rush of transcendent languorous bliss while the mind hovers above, intact and unmarked. Even if Sneaker Pimps weren’t so candid about backstage recreation (or didn’t drop lyrical hints like “my aim’s so weak that I’d fail to get into my arm”), you can’t escape the fact that their second album is a heroin album par excellence. Admittedly, a smarter and more professional brand of smack music – no William Burroughs squalor, no Needle Park lowlife. The spike goes in beside a penthouse window, lying on a sleek leather couch; no dust on the floor. But then, as a pop group, Sneaker Pimps always seemed far too smart for the daytime shows and MTV gladhandings…misfitcity

Shrift – Lost In A Moment (2006)

Shrift - Lost In A Moment cover

Shrift is a collaboration between former Smoke City vocalist Nina Miranda and multi-texturalist/producer Dennis Wheatley. Their aptly titled debut release, Lost In A Moment, brings together beautiful acoustic and electronic soundscapes with Miranda’s luminous vocals. Lost In A Moment is Shrift’s first album but it is hardly a debut for the group’s two members. Anglo-Brazilian Nina Miranda is a charter member of the celebrated group Smoke City and has recorded with such luminaries as Bebel Gilberto, Nitin Sawhney and Da Lata.

This Mortal Coil – It’ll End In Tears (1984)

This Mortal Coil - It'll End In Tears (1984) cover

The first thing I can tell you about Ivo Watts-Russell’s 4AD super group is that it plays for acquired tastes. Constantly switching vocalists and arrangement styles at any given time during a play list, the group choose at times rather obscure songs to cover. It’ll End In Tears, being This Mortal Coil’s first and most approachable album is none the less a wonderful forgotten gem. Released in 1984, almost none of this record sounds outdated. Produced in the classic 4AD sound, by washing the music over with a number of keyboard and reverb treatments. The result is a ethereal, distant yet thoughtful tribute. Those familiar with the dream pop outfit The Cocteau Twins and the medieval world fusion act Dead Can Dance will feel right at home here.
The most admirable trait of the band is ironically its unoriginality. There is a twist however. Whilst This Mortal Coil does little in the effort to write their own songs, the songs they cover are both brilliantly chosen and gorgeously executed. The best cover albums, quite frankly are those which update their original source material, whilst staying in touch with key emotions. This lends poignancy to the proceedings and coupled with This Mortal Coil’s ambient and dreamy soundscapes it also makes the material timeless…sputnikmusic

Veto – Crushing Digits (2008)

Veto - Crushing Digits cover

“If you say one more clever thing, I’ll just repeat it and act like I said it first,” sings Troels Abrahamsen on the track You Say Yes, I Say Yes on Veto’s second album Crushing Digits. A bit ironic really, because while they’ve stated they don’t want to create a style dependent on emulating other bands, unfortunately they imitate plenty of other bands like Bloc Party, The Killers, Klaxons, and at times Abrahamsen’s vocals are reminiscent of The Cure’s Robert Smith. While these are all great references to draw upon, this lack of originally leaves you feeling like it’s a moment in time already passed, irrespective of how catchy some songs are, how good the production is, and how great some of those indie-guitar-instrumentals happen to be. Veto are superstars in their home country of Denmark and in many other parts of Europe too, but I’m not sure their equal part rock to electronic formula is going to catch on here…racheld83
